Chemical Feeders

Did you know?

Automatic chlorine feeders prevent damage to your pool equipment and evenly distributes sanitizer throughout the pool. Adding chlorine into the skimmer is damaging to pool equipment because it is a high concentration of sanitizer moving through the system. Floating dispensers are safer for the pool equipment, but can be ineffective because they are only dispensing in their immediate area and not throughout the pool. Floating dispensers can also be unsafe to children or pets if played with, or be damaging to the pool surface if the chemical unintentionally falls out of the feeder.

Salt Systems

“Salt pools” are definitely the latest craze! Here is some information that we have based on our experience that you may find helpful. We are a service company that always tries to take an honest approach to everything we do and offer.

How salt systems work:

Food grade salt is added to the pool water and dissolved. While the amount of salt that is added may seem like a lot, the saturation level is below the thresh-hold of taste, so its’ not like ocean water. A generator is installed at the pool equipment pad and plumbed into the circulation system. As the water passes through the generator, there is a (safe) electrical charge between metal plates that the water is passing through. This process converts the salt that is in the water into chlorine and is then returned to the pool. When the chlorine is used, it returns to it’s salt state to begin the process again.

There are many benefits to salt sanitizing systems, but there are some draw backs as well that many don’t talk about when explaining the systems. We tell our clients “do NOT purchase a salt system to save money”. All manufacturers will tell you how much money in chemical you will save. We have found that looking at the “big picture”, in most cases these systems will not save money. Looking over a 7 year period (the longest average life expectancy of a salt cell), the cost is usually equal, if not more than chlorine tablet systems. There are many variables to consider. If you drain your pool every year to open, you will need to add new salt every year. This alone generally costs as much (or more) than the annual chlorine consumption in the Midwest. Then of course there is the initial cost of the system and replacement of the cell (average life of 4-7 years). Salt is also corrosive and will corrode anything metal that the water comes in contact with including metal pool lights, hand rails, automatic cover components, etc. There are products to slow the effects of salt, but this is a cost to consider.

Salt systems do have a huge benefit. While the salt in the water cannot be tasted, it is felt. Anyone that has swam in a salt pool will say that there skin has never felt better! The salt makes the water very soft, and the chlorine that is in the water is 100% pure. Tablets and other chemicals all have “other” ingredients that cause dryness and skin/eye irritation. The 100% pure salt chlorine is very comfortable to swimmers, especially to swimmers with sensitive skin, eyes, or chlorine sensitivities.

While the cost in many cases may be more for salt systems (contrary to what most advertise), many people find that the swimming experience is worth the additional money.
